The Price Of Sea Freight Continues To Drop, And The Number Of Empty Containers Increases Sharply

Nov 29, 2022

According to data from the General Administration of Customs of China, in the first 10 months of this year, my country's total import and export value reached 34.62 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 9.5%. In October, my country's exports in U.S. dollars were 298.37 billion U.S. dollars, a year-on-year negative growth of 0.3%, a sharp drop from 5.7%. This is also the first negative growth in U.S. dollar-denominated exports since 2020.

empty container increase

According to Bai Ming, deputy director of the International Market Research Institute of the Ministry of Commerce, the decline in exports in October is due to the fact that the strong purchasing power of developed countries is disappearing, and the Christmas shopping season is not busy, so the demand for Chinese products is slowing down. Affected by this, in some port yards in my country, containers have been stacked empty, and foreign orders have decreased and empty containers have increased, which has become a new problem.

From the perspective of industry insiders, in the future, the inventory of overseas companies will be digested, and the container will be eliminated, and the industry's surplus situation will be alleviated, but there are still great uncertainties. Shu Jueting, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Commerce, reminded that in the fourth quarter, the external environment will become more complex and severe, uncertain and unstable factors will increase, and insufficient external demand will become a prominent challenge.

After the rapid growth of foreign trade in 2021, the downward trend of foreign demand broke out suddenly this year. At present, "Black Friday" and the Christmas season are coming one after another, but the decrease in orders has caused the shipping industry to face the problem of "hard to find".
