PPG industrial group disclosed that the PPG Sungate 500 Starphire glass and Solarban 60 Starphire glass will be used in the Center for Sustainable Landscapes of Phipps greenhouses and botanical gardens in Pittsburgh.The addition of these two types of high quality building glass makes the center the first certified"living building"in the world.
The key to Phipps center glass selection is to balance visible light transmittance with solar thermal gain coefficient to achieve optimal overall performance.Chris Minnerl,chief architect of the design alliance responsilble for the use of glass,said:”glass assembly must have good UV transmission in a specific spectrum to help promote plant growth.
Minnerly also selected three layers of insulating glass installed in different parts of the buildind for detailed analysis.It is understood that the Sungate 500 Starphire glass will be installed in shading and shading,while Solarban 60 Starphire will be used inside the building.
