The cold-proof effect of glass windows mainly depends on two aspects, one is heat insulation, and the other is airtightness. Insulation is to prevent cold radiation or heat radiation from being transmitted to the room through radiation; airtightness is the ability to prevent air leakage.

From the perspective of heat insulation, most of the glass windows commonly used in buildings are three-layer glass windows, called triple glass pane, and two-cavity hollow glass windows. Compared with ordinary glass windows, this kind of glass window has better heat insulation performance. The cavity is an air cavity. Three-layer glass, there are two air chambers. The air cavity is not a vacuum, it is filled with dry air. This kind of heat insulation and heat preservation performance is better. In other words, there are many glass layers in windows, not only the window but also the air layers between the windows. The width and quantity of the air layer directly affect the thermal insulation effect of the glass window. After the air layer is added, the thermal performance of the window, that is, its heat insulation performance will be improved, mainly because the air layer is added with inert gas, which has a significant heat insulation effect. Under normal circumstances, if the filling amount of inert gas is higher than 70%, its heat insulation and cold resistance performance will be very good. Therefore, in theory, when other configurations are the same, three-glass two-cavity glass has better heat insulation and cold protection than other forms.
From the perspective of airtightness, with so many pieces of glass, so many air layers can not 100% obtain a window with a good cold-proof effect. In addition to the structure of the transparent window sheet, the window frame and other parts are also very important for cold protection, which will affect the airtightness. For multi-layer glass windows, airtightness means that the window frame is sealed to block the incoming wind, and means that the window itself does not leak. The better the insulating glass sealant, the longer the life of the insulating glass, and if the sealant is not selected well, the air-tightness of the insulating glass will be out of the question. In addition, a desiccant is also used in the hollow glass to absorb water vapor. If the desiccant is not good, the water vapor cannot be absorbed, and the hollow glass loses its energy-saving effect.
To sum up, three factors have an impact on the warmth and cold protection effect of glass windows.
1) Does the original glass sheet have an air layer? Is the air layer filled with inert gas? What is the filling amount of the inert gas?
2) For the edge sealing method between the glass and the frame, the sealing performance is generally relatively high, if silicone or rubber materials are used.
3) Frame material composition.
