U.S. Initiates Anti-Dumping Investigation Into Chinese Float Glass Imports

Jan 09, 2025

On January 2, 2025, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced the initiation of anti-dumping and countervailing duty investigations concerning float glass imports from China and Malaysia. The products under scrutiny include various types of float glass, such as clear, tinted, and coated glass, utilized in sectors like architecture, automotive, and electronics.

The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) is scheduled to make a preliminary determination on the potential injury to the domestic industry by January 27, 2025. Should the ITC find material injury or threat thereof, the Department of Commerce will proceed with its investigations, with preliminary countervailing duty findings expected by March 6, 2025, and anti-dumping determinations by April 30, 2025.

In 2023, the United States imported approximately $14 million worth of the specified float glass products from China. The surge in imports has raised concerns among U.S. manufacturers about potential market distortions caused by subsidized and underpriced foreign products.

This investigation adds to a series of trade actions involving Chinese glass products. In recent years, multiple countries, including Colombia, Australia, Mexico, and the United Arab Emirates, have initiated anti-dumping investigations on China's float glass, making 2024 a year with concentrated trade frictions in this sector.

The outcome of these investigations could significantly impact China's glass export strategies and its trade relations with the United States. Chinese glass manufacturers and exporters are advised to closely monitor the proceedings and prepare for potential adjustments in trade policies and tariffs that may affect their operations in the U.S. market.
